For two weeks in early summer, the lovely towns and villages in
Swaledale, Wensleydale and Arkengarthdale host this
celebration of music and arts for people of all ages and all walks
of life. Inspiring classical, folk and jazz musicians from around
the world are here to perform alongside popular local bands.
There are art exhibitions, workshops and special events for young
people, and a series of guided walks, many ending at a delightful
church just in time for a superb concert. There’s a good chance
that you’ll get to meet the artists too, as we encourage them to
stay for a few days whenever possible.
Highlights include the most revered classical guitarist in
the world, one of our best-loved playwrights, a familiar face from
The Antiques Roadshow, a top-class orchestra, the leading
exponent of the Northumbrian pipes, music from India and South
America and a poet who doubles as a magician. We feature young
performers too, with some particularly fine rising stars in the
world of chamber music.
We have four world premières, including the specially commissioned
Swaledale Variations, and the Festival reaches its
climax with a performance of Benjamin Britten’s Noyes Fludde in
which the whole community can
take part.
All this is made possible by
the generosity of local people, our
sponsors and funders, and an army
of dedicated volunteers.
To the people of North
Yorkshire and to all our visitors we
offer a magical fortnight of music
and art, and a warm welcome to
the 2008 Swaledale Festival.
