Celebrating Bach Northern Sinfonia
Bradley Creswick, director
Tim Garland, soprano saxophone

J.S. Bach Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor
Tim Garland Homage to Father Bach (World Première)
J.S. Bach Oboe Concerto in D Minor (soprano saxophone)
Stravinsky Concerto in E-Flat 'Dumbarton Oaks'
J.S. Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major

J.S. Bach’s masterful music still delights listeners with its powerful elegance 300 years after it was written, and the great man’s influence pervades almost every area of music. This special concert features two of J.S. Bach’s most famous works, the Double Violin Concerto and the 3rd Brandenburg Concerto being muchloved icons in the world of music. Bach’s delightful Oboe Concerto in D minor will also be performed, but this time with the solo part played on the soprano saxophone – an instrument with a similar range on which Tim Garland has been described as the finest player in the world.

In a welcome return to the Swaledale Festival for one of the world’s finest orchestras, the concert also features two ‘tributes’ to J.S. Bach: Igor Stravinsky’s neo-classical chamber concerto Dumbarton Oaks and Tim Garland’s newly composed Homage to Father Bach which includes references to the master’s oftforgotten improvisational prowess.

As well as being a saxophone virtuoso, Tim Garland is Composer in Residence at Newcastle University and has written several commissioned works for Northern Sinfonia, the LSO, RPO and the BBC Concert Orchestra. Tim is this year’s ‘Composer in Residence’ at the Swaledale Festival, and is featured with the Sacconi String Quartet, Carl Herring and Kathryn Tickell at various times during the fortnight.
